Every time I think this blog has seen its last makeover and achieved perfection, both in form and content, I get distracted by life and neglect it again, only to circle back around months or years later, with critical eyes. So here I am again--hello, Written Word. I don't have much time for drawn out excuses regarding my long absence, but my reason for returning is to share the reason for my return. I have been reading Donald Miller's newest book, Scary Close, and found a new creed for this season of my life. Perhaps if I read it enough times I will really live into it. That time I gave my thesis presentation, then ran into the bathroom afterwards and cried and cried for no apparent reason? I think this had something to do with it.
From Chapter 11 of Scary Close (slightly revised):
I am willing to sound dumb.
I am willing to be wrong.
I am willing to be passionate about something that isn't perceived as cool.
I am willing to express a theory.
I am willing to admit I'm afraid.
I am willing to contradict something I've said before.
I am willing to have a knee-jerk reaction, even a wrong one.
I am willing to apologize.
I am willing to be human.

Pics of the Day 11_11-13_13
Whoops--got a little behind. I suppose if I had a fancy schmancy iPhone I could post pictures within seconds of taking them....but alas I am stuck in the stone age days of taking a picture on a real camera, taking the memory card out of the camera, putting the memory card in my computer, signing onto blogger, and uploading photos from the card into a post. Wow. Workout for the day. I think I broke a sweat.
All facetious and snarky comments directed toward smart phones aside, here are pics from the last couple days, plus one extra one from the 10th--I can't help sneaking it in here, because it was a victorious moment for me. Back story: I have always struggled with keeping plants alive, usually because I either forget they exist, or because I over-water them. But I bought a bunch of plants for a terrarium project I added to my grad school application portfolio, and it was a pricey project, so I vowed I would keep the little buggers alive this time. Well, that was probably a month ago or more, and so far so good, until about a week ago when I noticed one of the plants looking weepy and off-color. I immediately tried to figure out what I was doing wrong--was I over-watering, was I not giving them enough oxygen in their enclosed jar, was there not enough topsoil for the roots to grow down....but then I found him. The slug. I thought it was a big ugly grub or an earthworm at first, but it was a slug munching away on my plant. Fortunately for him, I have a soft spot for slugs and snails, so I put him to work in the vermicompost bin. But here he is:

Monday's picture is of my portfolio that I had printed and bound at Staples--it really was easy!--to send to UGA....here's hoping.....
And...my two math tests that I took on Monday and got back today. I ACED my test on logarithms. And got the extra credit. And I aced my introductory stats test as well. Take THAT, mathematics! This English major is on FIRE.

April and I went out to Seabrook Island yesterday for a driftwood hunt....
....and today I took Brynn and Avari to the movies for their birthday. We listened to Taylor Swift in the car, got fro yo afterwards, and sported our hipster 3-D glasses.

I stirred the vermicompost bin for the first time yesterday. There were definitely still worms in there, hopefully doing their job. I've found more than one dried up worm body on my carpet. This whole vermicomposting experiment started back in my first year of teaching, where I had each 6th grade student put one together...like many of my middle experiments, it was a hilarious failure. More than one kid had worms escape. But I guess that's the fun of science--figuring it out.
I caught Pascal in action today going after a cricket. He does this great little balancing act, even without his tail.

Pics of the Day 11_5-6_13
Well the dreads are settling in, and I really enjoy my hair for the most part lately. A lot of it is still loose, but the dreads add some body to it...plus I don't brush it any more so that helps. It looks the best right after I have washed it and blow-dried it, like in the picture below.
In other news, I have finally learned what logarithms are in my 8 am College Algebra class. Today I learned how the half life of carbon is calculated. A great mathematical accomplishment for this English major.
