Stars and Hebrews

I recently learned that humans are able to see back in time.

When we look at the stars, we see them as they were hundreds and even thousands of years ago, because it takes light that long to travel through space to our eyes. A star that is 300 light years away will be to our eyes shining as it was 300 years ago. That star could have exploded in that time, be no more than a burnt out ball of gaseous chemicals in the present, but we will almost surely never know.

The book of Hebrews says that "His works were finished from the foundation of the world" (4:3b). The work of the cross happened thousands of years after the foundation of the world. I was born and became a believer even more thousands of years later. This boggles my mind. Yet what is so real and immediate and in the present to me today has already been real since the beginning of time. I am only seeing it as it is reaching me from outside my small conception of the universe. And what is to come--who I am to be in Christ--that work has already happened, and the Holy Spirit and I are simply making the journey together towards the vision of that reality.

The heavens declare His glory.
